How to treat Fibromyalgia with Medical Massage Therapy

Fibromyalgia is not a life-threatening disorder, but it is associated with fatigue, chronic pain, memory issues and severe mood swings.  This syndrome affects more women than men, but children and men are also affected with fibromyalgia.  Other symptoms associated with fibromyalgia are tension headaches, stiffness throughout the entire body and disruption in sleep patterns.  In some cases, the patients suffer from so much fatigue and pain that they are restricted to bed rest for days.  It is estimated that more than seven million Americans are afflicted with fibromyalgia.

Medical massage for fibromyalgia was designed to help individuals cope with the pain, and other debilitating symptoms of fibromyalgia (such as fatigue).  The people who have fibromyalgia have intense pain in their muscles, ligaments and tendons, and many have reported that their entire body is constantly aching at all times. Medical Massage therapy is a type of non-invasion treatment; that is safe and effective in alleviating aches, pains and muscle stiffness.

A study was conducted with individuals that have fibromyalgia, and 98% of those surveyed said that they use some sort of alternative and/or complementary medicines, to help manage this disorder.  Close to 45% of those individuals that were asked, said that they chose medical massage therapy, as a complementary treatment of choice.  Other studies have indicated; that over 90% of individuals with fibromyalgia use an alternative type of pain relieving treatment, and 75% of those prefer medical massage therapy.

There are many benefits of medical massage therapy, especially for people who suffer with fibromyalgia.  One important benefit, that should be noted, is that blood flow and circulation is increased, which means that important nutrients will get to vital organs quicker, so they function more efficiently.  Also, medical massage is known to elevate moods and decrease the need for pain medication. These benefits in turn, offer fibromyalgia patients a better overall quality of life.  In addition, heart rate is reduced, range of motion in the joints is improved, and muscles relax more.  More importantly, medical massage therapy will help a fibromyalgia patient sleep better, so they will wake up feeling refreshed. Many fibromyalgia patients, that were studied, incurred less pain throughout the day.

It has been proven that fibromyalgia pain is reduced with regular medical massage therapy sessions.  It is suggested that the reduction in pain, during and after a therapeutic massage, is related to the central nervous system.  The central nervous system is stimulated through massage, and this promotes the production of endorphins, serotonin and norepinephrine (which are all natural pain blocking hormones produced by the body).  When these hormones are triggered and activated by medical massage therapy, pain signals from the brain are blocked and the pain ceases.

In a conducted clinical study, people with fibromyalgia, who received ten 30 minute medical massages, reported more than a 40% decrease in painful symptoms.  Also, they reported sleeping better for longer periods of time, as well as feeling more rested after a good nights sleep.
